Sweden Visa Policy

There are three different types of visas to Sweden:

1. Schengen Visa - Short Stay Visa
2. Airport Transit Visa
3. National Visa – Long Stay Visa

As Sweden belongs to the list of Schengen countries, you should apply for a Sweden Schengen visa to make your temporary trip. Reasons to apply for this type of visa can be tourism, visiting family or friends, business trips, medical examination or treatment, short-term education, exchange programs, and many other non-permanent nuances.

If you want to study in Sweden for more than 90 days (such as bachelor's, master's, doctoral, etc.) or work permanently in an institution located here, you can also apply for a Sweden national visa if you have official invitations or letters of acceptance from those educational and business institutions.

Schengen Visa

The Schengen visa entitles the holder to visits of up to 90 days in every 6 months in the entire Schengen area.

Which Countries are in the Schengen Area?

The Schengen area is an area comprised of 26 European states that have abolished passport control at their shared borders and have adopted a common visa policy.

List of Schengen Countries:

If your citizenship country does not have a visa exemption agreement with Sweden and you want to come to Sweden for a short stay, for a business trip, holiday, family or friends visit, you will be required to apply for a Schengen visa beforehand. This short-stay visa is valid only for up to 90 days stay within a 180-day period in Sweden and all other Schengen area member states. The start date of the 180-day period is the day you enter Sweden or another Schengen country.

The main purposes of the visit for a Schengen visa are tourism, business, family visit, participating at cultural (scientific, sporting) events, study (up to 90 days), work (up to 90 days).

Sweden Schengen Visa

You can apply for short-term Schengen visas for realizing your temporary travel to Sweden. Reasons to apply for this type of visa can be tourism, visiting family or friends, business trips, short-term education, exchange programs, short-term work, and many other non-permanent nuances. Sweden Tourist Visa

If you intend to visit Sweden for the purpose of tourism for a period shorter than 90 days, depending on your nationality, you might be required to obtain a Sweden Tourist visa first.

The Sweden Tourist visa permits you to stay in Sweden and realize your tourist activities for a maximum period of 90 days at most per 180 days.

Required Documents for Sweden Tourist Visa

1. Application Form 

• Fully completed in English or Swedish and signed and dated by the applicant (signed by both parents in case of minors below the age of 18)

2. Passport

• Validity minimum of three months beyond the date of your departure from Sweden.
• Signed by bearer
• Passport not older than 10 years (issued in the last 10 years)
• At least two free “visa pages”
• Undamaged pictures securely affixed with/to passport

3. Two Photos

• NEW! Should not be older than 6 months.
• A frontal view of the face-covering 70-80% (32-26mm) of the photo.
• A uniform and white background.
• Clear facial features and eyes – not covered by hair or glasses frame.

4. ID Card Copy

• Validity minimum of three months beyond the date of your departure from Sweden.

5. Residence Permit/Visa Copy (if your country of residence and citizenship are different)

• Validity minimum of three months beyond the date of your departure from Sweden.

6. Photocopies

• Copy of the main page of your passport
• Copies of previous Schengen visa
• Copy of visa for the final destination (if any)

7. Travel Itinerary

• Flight reservation
• Valid (existing) hotel/accommodation booking/reservation with the full address (name, street, city, zip code, contact information, booking ref.)

8. Letter from Local Employer/Sponsor (Proof of Occupation)

• The letter must include:
  • Name, postal address, and telephone number of sponsor/company
  • Details regarding the applicant’s working position, starting date of the employment, and salary
  • The timeframe of work leave (expected date to resume duties) and purpose of travel
• Valid trade license copy and company ownership documents (if a person is an owner of the company).
• Letter from University (if student)
• Copy of sponsor’s valid passport and residence visa (if any) to be attached to letter from sponsor (if an applicant is a dependent)

9. Proof of Financial Means

• Generally, there are several recognized ways to prove your financial sufficiency:
  • A personal bank statement indicating your financial movements (for at least 3 last months)
  • Credit card
  • Cash
  • Traveler’s cheques
  • Payslips
  • Proof of employment
  • Supporting document to attest sponsor’s readiness to cover your expenses during your stay
  • Proof of prepaid accommodation
  • Document about accommodation in private
  • Proof of prepaid transport
  • Other

You should have money to support yourself and for the return trip home (Sweden also requires you to have 450 SEK for each day you stay in Sweden, which can also be paid for by the person who has invited you)

10. Overseas Medical Insurance

• Valid for the entire duration of the requested visa and for all Schengen countries.
• Minimum coverage 30,000 € and repatriation. (Medical insurances of credit cards are not accepted)
• Conditions must be stated either on the insurance document or on a separate confirmation letter.

12. For Minors:

• Copy and Swedish or English translation of either birth certificate/proof of adoption/custody decree if parents are divorced/death certificate of parent
• “Letter of consent” from parents, including passport copies of both parents/legal guardian

The average processing time for a Sweden Tourist visa is 12-20 working days. It depends on your visa application country.

Sweden Tourist Visa Fee

Since 02 February 2020, the fee for Schengen visas has been 80 EUR, to be paid upon submission of the application. Additionally, you may also need to pay other Administrative fees such as the Visa Application center fee, courier service fee, etc., depending on the country and location of your documents' submission.

Reduced Visa Fees for Certain Nationalities

According to the agreement signed between The EU and Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine, visa fee reduced to 35 EUR for the citizens of these countries.

Visa fees are waived by all Schengen states for the following categories of persons, regardless of their nationality:

• Children under six years
• School pupils, undergraduates, postgraduates, and accompanying teaching staff who undertake trips for the purpose of study or training
• Representatives of non-profit organizations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organizations
• Researchers from third countries traveling within the European Community for the purpose of carrying out scientific research as defined in Recommendation 2005/761/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 September 2005
• For the “replacement” of an old, valid visa in a “full” travel document (one that has no empty pages) with a new visa valid for the same period in the applicant’s new travel document
• For the spouses, same-sex partners in a civil union, and minor single children of Sweden citizens
• Parents of minor Sweden citizens
• Family members of EU/EEA nationals

Where to Apply for Sweden Tourist Visa?

You will apply for a Sweden Tourist visa in Sweden visa application centers, embassies, or consulates, whichever accepts visa applications in your country of residence. If there is none of them in your country, you need to apply to the nearest embassy or consulate to your location.

Sweden Cultural, Scientific, Sports Events Visa

The Sweden Cultural/Scientific/Sports Visa enables you to enter Sweden for cultural, scientific, or sports purposes, such as attending cultural events.

Documents Reflecting the Nature/Purpose of the Journey and Stay of Artist/member of Cultural / Sports Association In Sweden: Artist/Athlete Member Of Cultural/Sports Association In Your Country Travels to A Cultural/Sports Event Organized In Cooperation With A Sweden Cultural/Sports Association

• Letter of Local Cultural Association / Sports Association stating timeframe and schedule of cultural event/sports camp with details of organizer/host with full address in Sweden, as well as the purpose of cultural camp/event and information who covers costs (accommodation, travel expenses).
• If the applicant is under the age of 18, signed “letter of no objection” of school/university confirming participation in cultural / sports event.

12. For Minors:

• Copy and Swedish or English translation of either birth certificate/proof of adoption/custody decree if parents are divorced/death certificate of parent
• “Letter of consent” from parents, including passport copies of both parents/legal guardian

13. A Cover Letter Stating the Purpose of Visit to Sweden and Itinerary

Sweden Study (Up to 90 days) visa is granted to you to undertake trips to Sweden for study or educational training, which requires staying in Sweden up to 90 days per half a year.

• Letter from the Department of Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs in Sweden, if course to be followed, leads to a higher academic qualification.
• Letter from the Institute undertaking the return of the student to the country of residence upon completion of the study.

9. Letter from Local Employer/Sponsor (Proof of Occupation), if any

• The letter must include:
  • Name, postal address, and telephone number of sponsor/company
  • Details regarding the applicant’s working position, starting date of the employment, and salary
  • The timeframe of work leave (expected date to resume duties) and purpose of travel

3. Photos

• NEW! Should not be older than 6 months.

7. Invitation Letter from Host Family Clarifying the Following:

• At least one under-age child (minor) in the host family
• No kinship between the au pair and the host parents
• That least one of the host parents speaks Swedish (or other) as a mother language

8. Agreement with the Host Family

• This document must include the duration of the agreement, which must be no longer than a year. It should also state the work conditions – working hours, days off, pocket money, obligations, etc. -and give the address of the host family and other details about them.

13. Medical Insurance

• You must purchase health insurance arranged with an insurance company authorized to operate in Sweden with a validity of one year. Travel insurance is not accepted.
