Denmark Visa Policy

There are three different types of visas to Denmark:

1. Schengen Visa - Short Stay Visa
2. Airport Transit Visa
3. National Visa – Long Stay Visa

As Denmark belongs to the list of Schengen countries, you should apply for a Denmark Schengen visa to make your short trip. Reasons to apply for this type of visa can be tourism, visiting family or friends, business trips, medical examination or treatment, short-term education, exchange programs, and many other non-permanent nuances.

If you want to study in Denmark for more than 90 days (such as bachelor's, master's, doctoral, etc.) or work permanently in an institution located here, you can also apply for a Denmark national visa, if you have official invitations or letters of acceptance from those educational and business institutions.

Denmark Schengen Visa

The Schengen visa entitles the holder to visits of up to 90 days every 6 months in the entire Schengen area.

Which countries are in the Schengen area?

The Schengen area is an area comprised of 26 European states that have abolished passport control at their shared borders and have adopted a common visa policy.

List of Schengen countries:

If your citizenship country does not have a visa exemption agreement with Denmark and you want to come to Denmark for a short stay, for a business trip, holiday, family or friends visit, you will be required to apply for a Schengen visa beforehand. This short-stay visa is valid only for up to 90 days stay within a 180-day period in Denmark and all other Schengen area member states. The start date of the 180-day period is the day you enter Denmark or another Schengen country.

The main purposes of the visit for a Schengen visa are tourism, business, family visit, participating in cultural (scientific, sporting) events, study (up to 90 days), work (up to 90 days).

Denmark Tourist Visa

If you intend to visit Denmark with the purpose of tourism for a period shorter than 90 days, depending on your nationality, you might be required to obtain a DenmarkTourist visa first.

The Denmark Tourist visa permits you to stay in Denmark and realize your tourist activities for a maximum period of 90 days at most per 180 days.

Required Documents for Denmark Tourist Visa

1. Application Form 

• Fully completed in English or Danish and signed and dated by the applicant himself (signed by both parents in case of minors, below the age of 18)

2. Passport

• Validity minimum of three months beyond the date of your departure from Denmark.
• Signed by bearer
• Passport not older than 10 years (issued in the last 10 years)
• At least two free “visa pages”
• Undamaged pictures securely affixed with/to passport

3. Two Photos

• NEW! Should not be older than 6 months.
• A frontal view of the face-covering 70-80% (32-26mm) of the photo.
• A uniform and white background.
• Clear facial features and eyes – not covered by hair or glasses frame.

4. ID Card Copy

• Validity minimum of three months beyond the date of your departure from Denmark.

5. Residence Permit/Visa Copy (if your country of residence and citizenship are different)

• Validity minimum of three months beyond the date of your departure from Denmark.

6. Photocopies

• Copy of the main page of your passport
• Copies of previous Schengen visa
• Copy of visa for the final destination (if any)

7. Travel Itinerary 

• Flight reservation
• Valid (existing) hotel/accommodation booking/reservation with the full address (name, street, city, zip code, contact information, booking ref.)

8. Letter from Local Employer/Sponsor (Proof of Occupation)

• The letter must include:
  • Name, postal address, and telephone number of sponsor/company
  • Details regarding the applicant’s working position, starting date of the employment, and salary
  • The timeframe of work leave (expected date to resume duties) and purpose of travel
• Valid trade license copy and company ownership documents (if a person is an owner of the company).
• Letter from University (if student)
• Copy of sponsor’s valid passport and residence visa (if any) to be attached to letter from sponsor (if an applicant is a dependent)

9. Proof of Financial Means

• Generally, there are several recognized ways to prove your financial sufficiency:
  • A personal bank statement indicating your financial movements (for at least 3 last months)
  • Credit card
  • Cash
  • Traveler’s cheques
  • Payslips
  • Proof of employment
  • Supporting document to attest sponsor’s readiness to cover your expenses during your stay
  • Proof of prepaid accommodation
  • Document about accommodation in private
  • Proof of prepaid transport
  • Other

10. Overseas Medical Insurance

• Valid for the entire duration of the requested visa and for all Schengen countries.
• Minimum coverage 30,000 € and repatriation. (Medical insurances of credit cards are not accepted)
• Conditions must be stated either on the insurance document or on a separate confirmation letter

11. A Cover Letter Stating the Purpose of Visit to Denmark and Itinerary

12. For Minors:

• Copy and Danish or English translation of either birth certificate/proof of adoption/custody decree if parents are divorced/death certificate of parent
• “Letter of consent” from parents, including passport copies of both parents/legal guardian

Denmark Tourist Visa Fee

Since 02 February 2020, the fee for Schengen visas has been 80 EUR, to be paid upon submission of the application. Additionally, you may also need to pay other Administrative fees such as the Visa Application center fee, courier service fee, etc., depending on the country and location of your documents' submission.

Reduced Visa Fees for Certain Nationalities

According to the agreement, signed between The EU and Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine, visa fee reduced to 35 EUR for the citizens of these countries.

Visa fees are waived by all Schengen states for the following categories of persons, regardless of their nationality:

• Children under six years
• School pupils, undergraduates, postgraduates, and accompanying teaching staff who undertake trips for the purpose of study or training
• Representatives of non-profit organizations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organizations
• Researchers from third countries traveling within the European Community for the purpose of carrying out scientific research as defined in Recommendation 2005/761/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 September 2005
• For the “replacement” of an old, valid visa in a “full” travel document (one that has no empty pages) with a new visa valid for the same period in the applicant’s new travel document
• For the spouses, same-sex partners in a civil union, and minor single children of Denmark citizens
• Parents of minor Denmark citizens
• Family members of EU/EEA nationals

Where to Apply for Denmark Tourist Visa?

You will apply for a Denmark Tourist visa in Denmark visa application centers, embassies, or consulates, whichever accepts visa applications in your country of residence. If there is none of them in your country, you need to apply to the nearest embassy or consulate to your location.

Denmark Business/Congress/Trade Fair Visit Visa

Denmark Business visa gives you the authorization to enter Denmark and stay here for a maximum period of up to 90 days within six months, as permitted. It permits its holder to engage in business-related activities such as attending meetings or conferences, conducting or attending the training, conducting internal audits, installing equipment, or performing other temporary services for a client, local affiliate, or branch office.

Under the Business visa category, other following cases would be applicable:

• Business matters/meetings/ negotiation/trainings
• Conference/Congress/Exhibition
• Scientific/Research events
• Journalists
• Official delegations

• Invitation letter from company/authority in Denmark with full address, stating the purpose and duration of the business trip and/or
• Information on event/congress/trade fair being visited in Denmark with details of organizer/host, with full address in Denmark, duration of the event, and reason to take part (e.g. visitor ticket for trade fair).
• Only applicable if fair exhibitor: Information on trade fair by submitting exhibitor ticket/exhibitor invoice/confirmation letter reflecting status as trade fair exhibitor.
• Information reflecting the existence of trade relations or relations for work purposes stating details of Parties.
• Memorandum and Article of Association in original certified copy (registered with joint-stock companies) Trade License (first issued and present renewal), Proprietorship/Partnership documents

• Letter of Local Cultural Association/Sports Association stating timeframe and schedule of cultural event/sports camp with details of organizer/host with full address in Denmark, as well as the purpose of cultural camp/event and information who covers costs (accommodation, travel expenses).
• If the applicant is under the age of 18, signed “letter of no objection” of school/university confirming participation in cultural / sports event.

• If the invitee stays at the inviting person’s home, documents about the house (contract, payment for utilities, etc.)

Denmark Study Visa is granted to you to undertake trips to Denmark for study or educational training, which requires staying in Denmark up to 90 days per half a year.

• Letter from the Department of Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs in Denmark, if course to be followed leads to a higher academic qualification.
• Letter from the Institute undertaking the return of the student to the country of residence upon completion of the study.

What is an Airport Transit Visa?

An airport transit visa allows you to change planes at a Danish airport for onward travel to a destination outside the Schengen Area. The visa (also referred to as an 'A' visa) does not allow you to enter Denmark or another Schengen country. This means you cannot leave the airport, nor the international zone of the airport.

Changing Planes for Onward Travel within the Schengen Area: Short-stay Visa

If you are traveling to another Schengen country via Denmark, you will need a short-stay Schengen visa. Airport transit visas are not valid for this purpose.

Changing Planes Two Times within the Schengen Area for Onward Travel Outside Schengen: Short-stay Visa

If you are transiting through two different Schengen airports for onward travel to a country outside Schengen and the first transit airport is in Denmark, you need to apply for a short-stay Schengen visa. Airport transit visas are not valid for this purpose.

Regardless of whether or not you need an airport transit visa, it is the airline that decides to allow you onto the flight or not. Even if you have the necessary documents for your journey.

You can apply for an A-Type visa only if:

• You are planning to stay only in the airport's transit area and are not planning to leave it.  The A-Type visa does not authorize you to stay in the Schengen area.
