Germany Visa Policy

The Schengen area is an area comprised of 26 European states that have abolished passport control at their shared borders and have adopted a common visa policy.

If your citizenship country does not have a visa exemption agreement with Germany and you want to come to Germany for a short stay, for a business trip, holiday, family or friends visit, you will be required to apply for a Schengen visa beforehand. This short-stay visa is valid only for up to 90 days stay within a 180-day period in Germany and all other Schengen area member states. The start date of the 180-day period is the day you enter Germany or another Schengen country.

Visa Fee

Since 02 February 2020, the fee for Schengen visas has been 80 EUR, to be paid upon submission of the application. Additionally, you may also need to pay other Administrative fees such as the Visa Application center fee, courier service fee, etc., depending on the country and location of your documents' submission.

Reduced Visa Fees for Certain Nationalities

According to the agreement, signed between The EU and Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine, Transit visa fee reduced to 35 EUR for the citizens of these countries.

Visa fees are waived by all Schengen states for the following categories of persons, regardless of their nationality:

Children under six years
School pupils, undergraduates, postgraduates, and accompanying teaching staff who undertake trips for the purpose of study or training
Representatives of non-profit organizations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organizations
Researchers from third countries traveling within the European Community for the purpose of carrying out scientific research as defined in Recommendation 2005/761/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 September 2005
For the “replacement” of an old, valid visa in a “full” travel document (one that has no empty pages) with a new visa valid for the same period in the applicant’s new travel document

Processing Time

The average processing time for the application for a German visa is approximately 15 calendar days. Please consider that you must submit your visa application not earlier than six months and later than the average processing time before your planned date of transiting through Germany.

Single, double, or multiple-entry visa

The Schengen visa can be in three types, depending on the holder’s purpose of travel: it can be used for one, two, or multiple entries to the Schengen area.

If you are planning to leave and re-enter the Schengen area during your visit, you will need to apply for a double or multiple-entry visa. You must specify it in your Schengen visa application form, which type of visa you are applying for.

If you have multiple entry Schengen visas with a validity of more than six months, 1, 2, 3, 5 years, you can use it for one, entire 90-day stay, or for two or more visits not exceeding 90 days within every 180 days.

If you stay for the consecutive 90 days, you will need to exit the Schengen area for another 90 days before being eligible for another Schengen visa.

Germany Tourist Visa

If you intend to visit Germany with the purpose of tourism for a period shorter than 90 days, depending on your nationality, you might be required to obtain a Germany Tourist visa first.

The Germany Tourist visa permits you to stay in Germany and realize your tourist activities for a maximum period of 90 days at most per 180 days.

You will apply for a Germany Tourist visa in Germany visa application centers, embassies, or consulates, whichever accepts visa applications in your country of residence. If there is none of them in your country, you need to apply to the nearest embassy or consulate to your location.

Germany Business/Congress/Trade Fair Visit Visa

A Germany Business visa gives you the authorization to enter Germany and stay here for a maximum period of up to 90 days within six months, as permitted. It permits its holder to engage in business-related activities such as attending meetings or conferences, conducting or attending the training, conducting internal audits, installing equipment, or performing other temporary services for a client, local affiliate, or branch office.

Overview

You do not need a Transit visa - if during a stopover at a German airport, you do not leave the International Airport Area and if the final destination is a non-Schengen member State.

Only five airports in Germany have an International Transit Area enabling you to transit without formally entering the Schengen area:

Hamburg Airport (IATA airport code: HAM; 4.30 a.m. - 11.30 p.m. only)

However, if for some reason you need to enter the Schengen area during your stopover (for example, to change terminals or if your final destination is one of the Schengen countries), you may require to apply for a Schengen visa – Category C, therefore please plan for this accordingly. Germany National Visa

Even if your country is exempt from visa requirements if you intend to stay longer than 90 days you will need to apply for a long-stay visa from your home country before coming to Germany. Exceptions to this are nationals of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and the United States of America. Citizens from these countries may enter Germany without a visa and then apply for a residence permit from inside Germany.

Citizens of all other countries planning to stay in Germany longer than 90 days must first apply for a long stay visa at their local mission before traveling to Germany.

The national visa (Nationales Visum) grants entry to Germany on the basis that you will be applying for a residence permit. It enables you to enter Germany as a potential resident and stay while you apply for residency. You will need to convert your visa into a residence permit within three months of arriving in Germany.

This visa is designed for applicants wishing to take up employment in Germany, as well as for high skilled persons, who are candidates for a Blue Card of the European Union.

The EU Blue Card allows third-country nationals with a university degree to take up employment in Germany commensurate with their qualifications. 13. Student Blocked Account

If you want to study in Germany, you will need money to cover your costs of living. This will include your fixed costs like rent or University administration fees, but also the costs for your everyday living (food, clothes, etc.) An amount equivalent to the amount of the monthly maximum support of the Federal Student Support (BAföG) - 853 Euro per month/10.236 Euro per year, has to be at your disposal. You will have to provide evidence of financial means for a full year of study.
The German Ministry of the Interior has fixed the amount required by foreign students to 853€ per month, accumulating to 10.236€ per year. This is the minimum amount that needs to be deposited on the account. It is possible to deposit more money into the account. To our knowledge, several banks in Germany offer this service to foreign students now (for example Deutsche Bank, Fintiba (online only), Targobank, Sparkasse, etc.), however, you can approach every bank in Germany. It is not necessary to be present in Germany. Please contact the international office at the university of your choice for further information if local banks offer blocked account options.

National Visa – Category D: Family reunion to EU Nationals (excluding citizens of Germany)

Spouses of EU Nationals, excluding German citizens, are exempted from providing a copy of their partners Meldebescheinigung (Certificate of Residence) and the requirements of Proof of sufficient means of substance and Knowledge of basic German language – Level A 1. They are requested to provide a copy of their partner’s employment certificate, however, salary slips are not required.

I am from a country whose citizens do not need a visa to enter the Schengen area. Can I experience any problems at the border, while entering Germany?

You must meet certain requirements to enter Germany, even if you are not required a visa:

The purpose of your trip to Germany must be plausible and comprehensible.
Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your stay in Germany.
You must be able to finance your own living and travel costs.
You must hold a confirmed return flight to prove that you are prepared to leave Germany before the duration of the permitted stay ends.

How long am I allowed to stay in Germany with 1, 3, 5 year valid multiple-entry Schengen visa?
