Netherlands visa types

There are three main Netherlands visa types:

  1. Schengen visa for short stay
  2. National visa for long stay
  3. Transit visa

Since the Netherlands is on the list of Schengen Agreement countries, you must apply for a Schengen visa for the Netherlands to make your short trip (less than 90 days). Reasons to apply can be business travel, tourism, visiting family or friends, medical examination or treatment, short-term education, exchange programs, and many other non-permanent nuances.

Those who plan to stay in the Netherlands for more than 90 days must apply for a long-term national visa in advance. Regardless of the duration of your planned stay, the duration of your long-term visa should be between three months and one year. If you would like to extend your visa, you must apply for a residence permit at the corresponding administrative department in the Netherlands.

During the validity period, a long-term visa is equivalent to a Schengen visa, allowing you to move and stay in the Schengen area outside the Netherlands for a period of 90-180 days. Under the same conditions, this is the same as if you hold a Schengen visa.

You can apply for a national visa for long-term work, studies, family reunification, etc.

Netherlands visa requirements

To apply, you need to follow Netherlands visa requirements. You will need to collect a package of documents and deliver them to the Dutch embassy or consulate in your country. If there is no Dutch embassy in your country, in this case, you will need to find out where you can apply.

Cost of the Netherlands visa

Since February 02 2020, the cost of the Netherlands visa fee for Schengen visas is €80, payable on application. In addition, you may also be required to pay other administrative payments such as Visa Application Center fees, courier fees, etc., depending on the country and where you submit your documents.

Under the agreement signed between the EU and Albania, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Moldova, Kosovo, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine, the visa fee for citizens of these countries is reduced to €35.

All Schengen states do not apply to the following categories of visa fee irrespective of their nationality:

  • Children under six years of age.
  • School and university students, postgraduate students and accompanying teachers who are travelling for study or teaching purposes
  • Representatives of nonprofit organizations under the age of 25 participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural, or educational events organized by nonprofit organizations
  • For spouses, same-sex civil union partners and single minor children of Dutch citizens.
  • Parents of minor Dutch citizens
  • Family members of EU/EEA citizens

Netherlands visa interview questions

Embassies/consulates may process interviews for the Netherlands visa in some countries. During visa interview questions, the candidate is not questioned solely about the information provided in the visa application form and supporting documents.

The diplomatic official wants to gather more information about the candidate's situation, primarily his or her ability to respond and honesty. The diplomatic office won't issue a visa to those who do not possess these qualities. The office wants to make sure that the visa holder will return home within the expected time and that he or she will not be prone to illegal activities within the Schengen area.
