Planning Christmas in Europe? If you need a Schengen visa from the UAE, what you do in October and November matters far more than anything you do the week before your appointment.
At Pickvisa, we work with Schengen visa applications in the UAE every day. Below are five things we regularly see making a real difference for December travelers, plus answers to the questions we get asked most.
1. Book your appointment now
December is one of the busiest seasons for Schengen applications from the UAE, so book as early as you can. As of early October 2026, some countries are already showing December appointments, and France and Spain may already have mid-December slots.
You can submit your application up to six months before your trip and no later than 15 days before it. The standard decision time is 15 days, but it can be extended to 45 days if the consulate needs a closer look (European Commission).
If you plan to fly in the second half of December, aim to submit your application by mid-November at the latest. That leaves room for extra document requests, a longer decision time, or a new application if something goes wrong.
2. Choose the right country for your first Schengen visa
If this is your first Schengen visa and you earn under AED 10,000 a month, start with the Czech Republic or Greece. In our experience, these two give first-time applicants with this profile the best approval rates.
Official EU figures show how much the consulate matters. In 2025, Bulgaria refused 58.2% of applications lodged in the UAE, and Malta refused 45.9%. Neither the Czech Republic nor Greece was among the ten strictest consulates (Gulf News, based on European Commission data).
One rule matters more than any statistic: apply to the country where you will spend the most time. If your stays are equal, apply to the first country you enter (European Commission).
So don't pick a consulate first and plan a different trip later. Build your trip around the Czech Republic or Greece, and spend most of your nights there. Consulates notice how visas are used: traveling mainly to another Schengen country, or canceling hotel bookings after the visa is issued, can lead to a refusal next time (Embassy of Lithuania).
3. Start building a steady bank balance now
Start building a steady bank balance now, not the week before your appointment. Consulates read your statements for patterns, not just the final number.
Expect to submit three to six months of statements, depending on the country. Officers look for a regular salary, normal spending and a balance that stays stable or grows. Also make sure the salary on your employer's NOC letter matches the salary credited to your account.
A sudden large deposit right before the appointment is one of the riskiest things we see, because it can look like borrowed money. If a big deposit is genuine, such as a bonus or the sale of a car, keep the paperwork and explain it in your cover letter.
4. Plan a winter itinerary that makes sense
Your itinerary should look like a real December holiday. Consulates compare it with your bookings, your budget and the season.
Christmas markets are the natural anchor for a December trip. Most open in late November and run until around Christmas, and some stay open into early January. Check the 2026 dates before you book.
Here is a sample week for a Czech Republic application, with most nights in the country you apply to:
- Days 1–4: Prague, for the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square Christmas markets, Prague Castle and Charles Bridge.
- Day 5: A day trip to Kutná Hora or Karlovy Vary, back in Prague for the night.
- Days 6–7: Vienna and its Christmas market at Rathausplatz.
- Day 8: Fly home from Vienna.
For Greece, pair Athens and Thessaloniki, which both dress their central squares for the holidays, with a mountain town like Arachova.
Leave Saint-Tropez and Nice for the summer. A beach-resort itinerary in December raises questions about the real purpose of your trip. Book refundable hotels in case of a refusal, but keep the bookings once your visa is issued.
5. New passport? Build some travel history first
A first Schengen application in a brand-new, empty passport gives the officer little to judge you by. If you can, take a short trip abroad first, so your passport shows that you travel and return on time.
Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Oman are short flights from the UAE, and many residents can visit them visa-free, on arrival or with an e-visa. What applies to you depends on your nationality and your UAE residence visa, so check the current rules before you book.
If your travel history is in an old passport, use it. The Greek Embassy's checklist for UAE applicants, for example, asks for copies of the old passport when you apply with a new one (Greek Embassy checklist).
