It is hard to answer, but there is no doubt that they are more than 20 (among various age groups). Also, till 2020 7 the World Chess Championships were held in New York City. The first one was in 1886, and the winner was Wilhelm Steinitz from Austria-Hungary Empire. Magnus Carlsen, the Norwegian chess master, won the last World Chess Championship in New York in 2018. Also, the 2020 Illinois Class State Championship (open tournament) will be online on 15.11.2020. Was there any World Chess Championship in Chicago? In 1907 several cities from the United States hosted the World Chess Championship, and one of them was Chicago. Other cities were New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C, Baltimore, and Memphis.

Unfortunately, there was not any information about upcoming chess tournaments in Los Angeles in the official website. Probably, it is because of the pandemic. 

Moscow

The former Soviet Union's capital and modern Russia are among the most important cities for the chess world. It is unbelievable that Moscow was the host city for 15 World Chess Championships. The first one was in 1897 during the Russian Empire, and the winner of that tournament was the chess world's legend, Emanuel Lasker (won six championships). After the collapse of the Russian Empire, 12 FIDE World Chess Championships took place in Moscow. Even between 1948-1969 ten times in a row. Only in 1948, Moscow shared the name of the host city with Hague (Netherlands). It is interesting that in all competitions, the winner was from the Soviet Union. After that, in 2002 and 2012, Moscow was the centre of the FIDE World Chess Championship. Indian chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand won the last FIDE World Chess Championship in Moscow. It was the concluding FIDE World Chess Championship win of the Indian Grand Master. Besides the World Championship, various amateur and professional chess tournaments are held every year in Moscow. Russia is one of the most powerful chess players (they are in the first plays in FIDE rating). They have 100 grandmasters, for instance, Alexander Grischuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Sergey Karakin, Dmitry Andreikin, Peter Svidler, Nikita Vitiugov, and more.

London

Of course, the most popular sports in the United Kingdom are football and tennis, but chess has memorable English people. Till today 7 Unofficial and four official world chess tournaments are held in the United Kingdom, and, interestingly, all of them were in London. The unofficial world championships were between 1834-1883. Even two grandmasters from the United Kingdom won those competitions. Howard Staunton in 1846 and Johannes Zukertort in 1883. When it comes to FIDE World Chess Championships, the first one took place in 1986, and besides London, another host was Leningrad. Garry Kasparov was the winner, and the second place was a grandmaster from the Soviet Union. The last FIDE World Chess Championship was held in London in 2018 and won by Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. Although people are interested in chess, we can say that they are not successful in chess compared to other sports. They have never won the official World Chess Championship. England is in 13th place in FIDE country ranking. 

Berlin and other German cities

Although Berlin is famous for architectural wonders, Opera buildings, museums, and more, it hosted several crucial sports tournaments, and one of those is the Chess World Championship. Till today three world tournaments took place in Berlin. The first competition was in 1910, and, weirdly, there were two championships in the same year (Vienna-Berlin and Berlin again). Legendary Emanuel Lasker won both of them. After 19 years, Belin hosted the most crucial chess tournament once more, but they shared it with Wiesbaden, Heidelberg, and The Hague. Where are chess tournaments held in modern Germany? Nowadays, most crucial championships take place in other cities in Germany. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the German Chess Championship Summit was the first essential tournament in Germany, and it took place in Magdeburg from August 14th to 22nd. Ten tournaments organized in this summit: German Masters, Women's German Masters, German Championship, German Lightning Championship, Women's German Blitz Championship, German Cup, German Seniors Championship, German Seniors Lightning Championship, and German Seniors Rapid Championship. Germany is 11th in the FIDE World Ranking, and they have 96 grandmasters.

Rome

Unlike most cities on our list, Rome has never hosted the FIDE World Chess Championship, but organizers planned more than 12 tournaments in Rome in 2020. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, most of them were cancelled by organizers. Some of the competitions that will occur are CIG- LIDO DI OSTIA U10, CIG - LIDO DI OSTIA U12, and CIG- LIDO DI OSTIA U18. These tournaments will take place on 2020-10-25. Moreover, six other competitions will occur, and they will be between 2020-10-03- 2020-10-24. Unfortunately, most Italian cities such as Genova, Milan, and more were cancelled, too. Was there any FIDE World Chess Championship in Italy? Yes, the first and the only FIDE World Chess Championship took place in Kurhaus and Merano in 1981, and the winner was Anatoly Karpov from the Soviet Union.
