Germany Transit Visa

Overview

You do not need a Transit visa - if during a stopover at a German airport, you do not leave the International Airport Area and if the final destination is a non-Schengen member State.

Only five airports in Germany have an International Transit Area enabling you to transit without formally entering the Schengen area:

  • Frankfurt am Main Airport (IATA airport code: FRA)
  • Munich International Airport (IATA airport code: MUC)
  • Hamburg Airport (IATA airport code: HAM; 4.30 a.m. - 11.30 p.m. only)
  • Düsseldorf International Airport (IATA airport code: DUS; 6.00 a.m. - 9.00 p.m. only)
  • Cologne/Bonn Airport (IATA airport code: CGN; 4.30 a.m. - 11.00 p.m. only)
  • Berlin-Tegel Airport (IATA airport code: TXL; 06.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m. only)

However, if for some reason you need to enter the Schengen area during your stopover (for example, to change terminals or if your final destination is one of the Schengen countries), you may require to apply for a Schengen visa – Category C, therefore please plan for this accordingly. You must apply for a German transit or tourist visa well before you travel.

FAQ

I am from a country whose citizens do not need a visa to enter the Schengen area. Can I experience any problems at the border, while entering Germany?

You must meet certain requirements to enter Germany, even if you are not required a visa:

  • The purpose of your trip to Germany must be plausible and comprehensible.
  • Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your stay in Germany.
  • You must be able to finance your own living and travel costs.
  • You must hold a confirmed return flight to prove that you are prepared to leave Germany before the duration of the permitted stay ends.
  • You must have travel health insurance for the whole duration of your stay in Germany.
  • You must not pose a threat to security or public order.

How long am I allowed to stay in Germany with 1, 3, 5 year valid multiple-entry Schengen visa?

This visa gives permission to its holder to enter the Schengen Area (all 26 member States) as many times as they wish, within a period of 1, 3, 5 years. However, even in this case, the visa holder is limited to remaining in the Schengen Area no longer than 90 days within a 180-day period.

Can a Schengen visa be extended or transferred to a residence permit?

A Schengen visa is issued for a maximum period of stay of three months and cannot be extended. The visa must be applied for, by the traveler personally, at the German Foreign Mission abroad, which is responsible for the place of residence and cannot be extended in Germany, nor converted into a residence permit.

How long is German visa valid for?

Schengen visas are valid for a maximum of 90 days (within 180 days) from your arrival date. The Schengen visa is not valid before the arrival date you provide on your visa application.

An airport transit visa is valid for the period it takes you to transfer between flights in a German airport.

National visas are usually issued for three months but can be valid up to 12 months, depending on your reason for requesting a visa. The national visa will cover you while your residence permit application is processed.

Can I work on a German visa?

It depends on the type of visa you apply for. As a foreign national, you are not permitted to work in Germany unless your expressly stated purpose when applying for a visa was employment.

Can I extend my German visa?

It is possible to extend the validity of visas only in exceptional cases, such as a natural disaster. This must be done at the Foreigners’ Office (Ausländerbehörde) covering your area of residence.

What happens if my German visa application is rejected?

If your German visa application is rejected, you will be notified by your mission that your application has been unsuccessful. You will be informed of the grounds on which it was rejected and have one month to appeal the decision by writing to the German mission. Your application will then be reconsidered.

Can I submit my visa application through mail, a courier, or through another person?

All applicants must appear in person in the Embassy/Consulate or Visa Application Center for the submission of the documents since the identity needs to be verified, and biometric data must be collected. Please contact local German representatives for more precise information.

My Schengen visa has been issued by the German Consulate, could I use this visa to make a side trip to other Schengen and European countries?

  1. Single-entry Schengen visa:

This visa allows you to enter the other Schengen Member States as well, but not to enter other European countries, such as Croatia, Bulgaria, etc.

  1. Multiple-entry Schengen visa:

This visa entitles you to travel outside of Germany, within the Schengen Agreement, and other European countries.

Where to apply for a transit visa?

You will need to apply for a transit visa at the Germany visa application center, embassy, or consulate, whichever accepts visa applications, in your country of residence.
